Swiss supermarkets stop sales of glyphosate over health concerns

Swiss supermarket giants Coop and Migros have announced that they will no longer sell products that contain glyphosate, following the World Health Organization’s report stating that glyphosate is a probable human carcinogen. They have also announced that they will be exploring non-toxic alternative weed-killers.

Roundup had toxic effects on the hearts of rabbits and rats in a new study led by Steeve Gress and conducted with Pr René Rouet and Prof Gilles-Eric Seralini at the University of Caen, France


The findings of the new study may provide an explanation for anecdotal reports from hunters of rabbits dying suddenly after crossing a Roundup-sprayed field, and from pet owners of dogs dying of seizures after exposure to Roundup-sprayed lawns – as well as cases of heart problems documented in people after Roundup poisoning.

Highlights
• We investigated the effects of a glyphosate-based herbicide after an 8-day exposure of adult rats.
• We have shown a significant and differential expression of aromatase in testis.
• We have observed a diminution of mRNA expression of nuclear markers in spermatozoa.
• These results suggest changes in androgen/estrogen balance and in sperm nuclear quality.
• The repetition of exposures of this herbicide could alter the mammalian reproduction.
