/user/image/actualitePicture_037326.pngA major trait shared by agricultural GMOs commercialized worldwide is the production of a modified insecticidal proteins (Bt toxins) to kill insects. CRIIGEN supported several years ago, the first study of toxic effects of modified Bt toxins produced by GMOs on human cells (Mesnage et al., JAT, 33:695-9.). A new study of their toxic effects on aquatic sentinel species, the most sensitive to environmental contaminations, has just been published in the "Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health". This study shows that Bt toxins released into the environment from GMO cultivations could have deleterious effects on aquatic invertebrate populations.
